Wike plans rousing reception for Tinubu, declares public holiday

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has declared Wednesday 3 May 2023, a public holiday to enable the people give the President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a rousing welcome.

The President-Elect during his two day visit to Rivers State is scheduled to commission the Rumuola/Rumuokwuta Flyover on Wednesday.

On Thursday, he will commission the ultra-modern Magistrates’ Court Complex.

Both monuments are in Port Harcourt.

Governor Wike, in a broadcast on Tuesday said during Tinubu’s presidential campaign visit to Rivers State, he had indicated intention to have him commission some strategic projects in the State after the general elections.

He said a formal invitation was sent to the President-Elect after the general elections, which he graciously accepted.

Governor Wike explained that the proposed visit to Rivers State is Senator Tinubu’s first visit to any State since he emerged as the President-Elect of Nigeria.

According to him, by this visit, the President-Elect will join the long list of distinguished Nigerians the State had hosted to either flag off or commission landmark projects.

“For us, it is an honour to the government and people of Rivers State to host the President-Elect on this historic visit.

“Consequently, I urge all Rivers citizens to come out en masse to receive our President-Elect, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and display the traditional Rivers hospitality as he commissions these legacy projects to God’s glory and the advancement of our development.

“Given this, I hereby declare Wednesday, 3rd May 2023, a public holiday to enable the people of Rivers State to receive our President-Elect rousingly.

“Furthermore, all shops and business premises along Rumuola to Rumuokwuta roads in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the State shall remain closed from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 3rd May 2023. I urge all labour unions and security agencies to comply with this closure order.”

Governor Wike has therefore, enjoined Rivers people to come out in great numbers and give, “our amiable President-Elect a rousing welcome during his visit.”

Siminialayi Fubara

PDP retains Rivers as Fubara wins

INEC has declared PDP’s Candidate, Mr Siminialayi Fubara, winner of the Saturday’s Governorship election in Rivers.

Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, the State Returning Officer for INEC who declared the results on Monday at the INEC headquarters in Rivers, said that PDP scored 302,614 votes.

Rim-Rukeh, who is also the Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, said that Mr Tonye Cole, the governorship candidate of the APC, polled 95,274 votes to come second, while the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Sen. Magnus Abe, scored 46,981 votes and placed third.

He added that the Governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mrs Beatrice Itubor, scored 22,224 votes to come fourth, Accord Party (A) scored 7155; Action Alliance (AA),1693; All Alliance Congress (AAC) 386; Action Democratic Party (ADP), 925; and Action Peoples Party (APP), 973 voted.

According to Rim-Rukeh, “Siminialayi Fubara of PDP, having scored the highest votes and had the 25 per cent spread with satisfactory margin of lead, and having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner”.

Rim-Rukeh gave the state’s total number of registered voters as 3,537,190 and the number of accredited voters as 496,852

He said that the total votes cast were 494,604; total valid votes, 483,934 while the total number of rejected votes was10,670 in the election.

The PDP candidate won in all the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.
