Tinubu urged me to step down for Akpabio, says Gov. Umahi

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has disclosed that the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urged him to step down for Sen. Godswill Akpabio in the race for the 10th Senate’s presidency.

Umahi made the disclosure on Monday at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke while answering questions from newsmen on arrival to the state from Abuja.

The governor said that he discussed the issue of his senate presidency bid with Tinubu and had to accede to his request in the interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the South East zone.

“I discussed the issue with him when he was in Paris and on return to the country, he invited me.

“It was an honour to be invited by the president-elect and he told me that he had made commitments.

“It is his right as the president-elect to make commitments and anyone running for such office makes promises.

“I did not want to be a clog in the wheel of his progress so I accepted,” he said.

Umahi said that his withdrawal from the race was in the interest of the south east as it could no longer continue to be in the opposition.

“We cannot continue opposing everything as politics is all about dialogue, give and take.

“What could have happened if I said no and considering our efforts to promote the APC in the zone, we will get a tangible position,” he said.

The governor said that he was not aware of any resolution of south east senators to support former Abia Governor, Sen. Orji Kalu for the position.

“I am the chairman of the Akpabio campaign council and can tell you that we have more APC senators on our side,” he said.

He said that he would never lobby to be appointed a minister in the incoming administration but leave the decision to destiny, Tinubu and the party.

“I will accept whatever God wills for me but as a person, I will prefer to be in the senate to rest.

“I will however, have no choice if it is the sacrifice to make in the interest of the party, south east and to help the president-elect,” he said.

President-elect Tinubu

Since God did not stop Tinubu, No power can rob him of Presidency

,

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi, on Tuesday said no power can deprive the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, of his mandate, since God did not stop him from winning.

Umahi, who made the assertion in Abakaliki, dedicated the victory of the All Progressives Congress in the State and across the country to God.

According to him, those seeking to upturn the victories at the tribunal are simply wasting their time and resources.

“APC as a Party merited all it got at the polls,” the added.

He advised those thinking they would rob Tinubu of his mandate to have a re-think because he cannot be stopped.

“When people say they are going to Court or going to tribunal, I just laugh because there is no power or force that can remove Tinubu from being the President of Nigeria. This is because the time God would have stopped him, God allowed him.

“Because God allowed him, no man can stop him.

“And this extreme politics should be de-emphasized in Nigeria, so we can move forward for a better Nigeria,” Umahi said.

I prayed for Tinubu’s victory, I didn’t hide it – Gov. Umahi

,

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has said that he prayed for Sen. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the presidential election of February 25.

Umahi said this on Tuesday in Abakaliki, while addressing stakeholders and people of Izzi clan ahead of the March 11 Governorship and House of Assembly polls.

He said that he did not hide his supplications to God that Tinubu and all the APC candidates should win at the polls.

“I prayed to God to bring Tinubu on board, give me a voice to stand with the people and bring unity to Nigeria.

“I promised God that I will fight a battle to re-unite this country and bring peace and prosperity to it.

“This is my pledge to God and I will do it because it is time for the leaders of this country to make sacrifices.

“The situation is bad, the country’s resources can develop it, with Ebonyi being an example,” the governor said.

He urged the Igbo people to support the government in power in their various states of abode for them to have peace.

“Ndigbo should support APC governors in particular, support Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos and Nyesom Wike in Rivers, among others.

“It is where a man lives that he prospers as you can’t be staying in a place and plot against its people,” he said.

Umahi urged the Izzi people to be united to win the gubernatorial poll because it was their turn according to the existing charter of equity in the state.

“I cannot support anybody from the Southern Senatorial District as myself to succeed me.

“Anybody from Izzi supporting someone from the south to become governor is not normal but you should not fight such a person.

“Such a person has already destroyed him or herself because this is pay back time for you for supporting the south in 2015,” Umahi said.

The Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Mr Ebere Nwogba, thanked the governor for convening the meeting, saying that they appreciated his good intentions towards them.

Prominent persons from the area took turn to thank the governor for fulfilling his promise to support one of their own to succeed him.
