President-elect charges Progressive Governors to remain united, work with party leadership

President-elect, Asíwájú Bola Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, met with the All Progressives Congress(APC) governors who paid him a courtesy visit and urged them to work with the party leadership and lawmakers on the election of principal officers of the National Assembly.

“We thank God Almighty for our electoral victory. It was tough and turbulent.

“The challenge before us is working in unison with the party leadership and the National Assembly over the election of their principal officers. And I charge you to unite in spirit and faith and work in line with the party,” he said.

The President-elect told the governors and former governorship candidates of the party that “whether you return or not, this is our government.

“Once we know what we are doing and communicating as elected leaders and loyal party men, we will conquer the challenge.”

He reiterated his earlier admonitions that, as leaders, they were elected to serve the people and humanity with fairness and justice.

Sounding emotional, he expressed gratitude to God that he, “the first Muslim minority from the South-West got the blessing of Allah to be elected president.”

Dismissing speculations about his health, the President-elect said “all speculation has been perished and their purveyors brought to shame.”

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors who is also the governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, led his colleagues to Tinubu’s residence.

Among those in attendance were Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima and Governors Simon Lalong (Plateau), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Hope Uzodinnma (Imo), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Babajide Sanwo-olu (Lagos), Ben Ayade (CrossRivers), Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq (Kwara), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti).

There were also the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Kelechi Igwe and APC governorship candidate in Kano State, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.

Governor Bagudu said the visit was to congratulate Asíwájú Tinubu over the election, extend goodwill to him over the end of Ramadan Fast and welcome him back from his recent travel and celebrate with him.

He also said, however, that the governors were ready for any assignment the President-elect may give them.

On the task with respect to the election of presiding officers of the National Assembly, he pledged that the governor would continue to discuss and work with the party and the lawmakers to arrive at the best decision in the interest of the country.

Buhari meets with APC governors

Buhari says decision on naira swap deadline in 7 days

,

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday urged Nigerians to give him seven days to resolve the cash crunch that has become a problem across the country.

The cash crunch emanated from the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to change Naira notes with new ones.

Buhari asked for the time to make a decision at a meeting with members of the Progressive Governors Forum who came to the Presidential Villa to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.

The meeting held Friday.

President Buhari said the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits while expressing doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy.

“Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves”, said the President, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away.”

He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people and gave assurances that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension will be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation.

“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the President assured.

The Governors told the President that, while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good and they are fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.

They told the President that, as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming.

They requested the President to use his powers to direct the concurrent use of the new and old notes till the end of the year.

The President said when he considered giving the approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed in a foreign country and they in turn gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs.

He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening.

President Buhari told the Governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and will act in a way that there will be a solution.

The campaign motorcade snaked through filled up streets to the Emir’s Palace in the city for a homage to the emir, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, before moving to the campaign ground at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, which was filled to the brim.

The presence of the two leaders electrified the crowd which danced to campaign songs. Waving to the crowd Tinubu also danced as he moved around the podium along with the president.

Addressing the rally, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for discharging himself creditably a d making the party proud.

He said the outpouring of people indicated the appreciation of the North East to the Buhari administration for liberating them from the menace of Boko Haram, in addition to other benefits brought to the people.

“PDP abandoned the North East to Boko Haram. They left us in their hands to kill us, at a point when we complained they blamed us for it. But when you came, you liberated our people, you changed the story.

“It is incumbent upon us to continue to do what is expected of us by voting for the APC in appreciation of the benefits our people got from your leadership,” he said.

Kebbi State governor, Senator Bagudu, who spoke on behalf of APC governors, expressed appreciation to President Buhari for many people-centered policies which enriched poor farmers and aided the poor and vulnerable.

He said APC governors are solidly behind the APC candidate in line with the directive of President Buhari for all party members to ensure the victory of “his friend and partner, Asiwaju Tinubu”.

Bagudu urged the people of Bauchi State to replicate the support they have always accorded President Buhari to Tinubu in the February 25 election.

Though both Buhari and Tinubu could not address the crowd due to electrical glitch encountered mid-way into the programme, the president went back to the podium to once again cheer up the crowd before handing over the party’s flag to the presidential candidate to bring the rally to an end.

In his prepared speech which he could not read at the venue Tinubu promised to consolidate on recent gains to foster prosperity across the country.

“Mr President, you have showed them that our party is a party of thinkers and doers; people who can find a way where there is none. We thank you for that.

“And it is this spirit of finding way in the middle of nowhere, of drawing water from dried wells that we seek to consolidate when we succeed in getting the mandate of Nigerians.

“At a time of dwindling revenues and global economic crises, we need to explore all available resources that could help resolve our development challenges. It is for this reason that projects like Kolmani and AKK gas pipeline started by the Buhari administration will be accelerated under my leadership.

“We will create wealth through value addition across all the major planks of our economy. We will make farming profitable and support agro-allied industries that will help us process what we produce, instead of just selling raw produce. We will bring forth prosperity, insha Allah!”

Tinubu also promised to prioritize security in order to engender the right environment for business to thrive.

“Our security forces will be adequately empowered to respond to residual challenges we are facing. You will have the peaceful environment you require to engage in productive enterprise.

“My dear people of Bauchi State, I urge you to offer me the same support you have always accorded our party, the APC, and even more. You have always loved President Buhari and his party. I count on you to victory.”
